DREAM MACHINES | The Machines That Shaped Video Game History
If you’re spending a few days in Tokyo this September and have a passion for video game history, there’s an exhibition you won’t want to miss.
On September 22 and 23, the Institut français du Japon – Tokyo will host The Tenth Mosaic, a festival dedicated to video game culture, bringing together Japanese and international creators for talks, exhibitions, live music, workshops, and much more.
Among the exhibitions is one that’s particularly special to us: DREAM MACHINES. And there’s one detail that makes us especially excited: Shinyuden is taking part in the exhibition with pieces from our private collection.
Consoles That Seem Almost Impossible
The exhibition features some truly remarkable pieces for anyone interested in video game history:
- Panasonic M2, a console that never made it to commercial release and remained a prototype.
- Amstrad Mega PC, a fascinating combination of a PC and a Mega Drive.
- 3DO Coca-Cola Edition, one of the rarest and hardest-to-find versions of the console.
- Nabi Saturn, a little-known Korean version of the SEGA Saturn.
- Xbox Panzer Dragoon Edition, a particularly unusual edition connected to one of SEGA’s most iconic franchises.
- Alpine Mega Jet
- Honda Verno Game Gear Pack
- SEGA TeraDrive
- Capcom CPS Changer
- Famicom Titler
- MSX turbo R A1GT
- X68000
- FM TOWNS Marty
- Satellaview
- …and many other rare machines and special editions.
Some were released in extremely limited quantities. Others never made it into stores. And some represent ambitious experiments that ultimately never made it beyond the prototype or concept stage.
Much More Than a Retro Hardware Exhibition
Beyond DREAM MACHINES, The Tenth Mosaic will feature a packed two-day program celebrating video game culture.
International guests include Éric Chahi, creator of Another World, and Frédérick Raynal, creator of Alone in the Dark, who will take part in talks alongside renowned Japanese creators.
The program will also feature appearances by figures such as Yoko Taro, Fumito Ueda, and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, among other leading names from the industry. There will also be sessions celebrating the 30th anniversary of Persona and the 25th anniversary of Rez, alongside many other events that make The Tenth Mosaic a true celebration of video game history.
Video Game History, All in One Place
DREAM MACHINES offers a unique opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of video game history and get up close with some of the rarest and most unusual hardware ever produced.
